INTERESTING FACTS - ANGKOR WAT

It is considered to be the largest religious monument in the world (Spread across over 400 acres in the heart of the Cambodian jungle).  It features in the Cambodian flag.
It was originally built as a Hindu temple but gradually became a Budhist temple towards the end of the 12th century.  Angkor Wat means 'city of temples'.
5 millions tonnes of sandstone went into building this massive religious monument. It took about 35 years to complete the Angkor Wat.
It is supposed to be the symbolic representation of Mt Meru (the sacred five-peaked mountain). The orientation of Angkor Wat is towards the west unlike others which are directed to the east.
