Unseen Passage for Class 4 - Passage 14
Posted by Olympiad Tester on
"Sunday is always the most enjoyable day for me. I do not have to go to school, neither do I have to go for tuition lessons. It is simply the best day to do anything I want." At that moment, a knock disrupted my thoughts. Mother barged in to say that she was going to the supermarket. Before shutting the door, she reminded me to turn off the fire on the stove after the water in the kettle had boiled.
Answering her with a wave of my hand, I continued to toss and turn in the warmth of my bed. Soon, I fell back into a deep slumber. Not long after, I was awoken by a waft of smoke. Without delay, I rushed into the living room and then to my parents' room, hoping to find the source of the smell, but to no avail.
Instinctively, I rushed to the kitchen. Seeing the fire caused by the burning kettle, my legs turned to jelly. I had forgotten about Mother's reminder for me to turn off the stove. For a brief moment, I was clueless about how I should react. Panic-stricken, I threw pails of water on the fire, attempting to put it out.
After splashing numerous pails of water at the fire, the flames were reduced to a sizzle. Seeing that it had worked, I heaved a huge sigh of relief and slumped to the floor, exhausted by my efforts to extinguish the fire. Just when I thought the worst was over, the door opened, followed by a familiar greeting, "Lucy! Lend me a hand with the groceries!"
"It is time to face the music," I thought to myself, worriedly."
