Unseen Passage for Class 4 - Passage 12
Posted by Olympiad Tester on
Once there was a red ogre who lived on a mountain that overlooked a village. He wanted to befriend the children, so he put up a welcome sign in front of his house. It read, "Home of a Gentle Ogre. All are welcome. Tea and Tasty Cakes Available."
One day, two children passed by the red ogre's house and saw the sign. One of them said, "Let's go in and get some tea and cakes." But the other said, "No, no. That sign is only a trick so that the ogre can get us and do something bad. Don't go inside!" They were about to leave when the red ogre called out through the window. "No, no. It's not a trick. Please come in and be my friends." But they were frightened by his bright red face and bolted as fast as they could.
When the red ogre saw that nobody would believe his sign, he started to take the sign down. Just then, his good friend, the blue ogre came to visit him and asked him why he looked so crestfallen.
After the blue ogre had heard the story, he said, "I have an idea. Here's what you need to do." The next day, the blue ogre pretended to terrorize the children. Just then, the red ogre appeared and chased him off in front of the villagers. The plan went without a hitch. The villagers cheered loudly and hailed him as a hero. The red ogre became very popular among the children and they all became his friends.
The red ogre was very happy and he always gave the children tasty cakes and delicious tea. But one day he suddenly remembered that the blue ogre had not once seen him since that day. He then went to visit the blue ogre's house but found the house empty with only a note pinned on the door.
The note said, "Dear Red Ogre, if we visit each other the way we used to, the villagers would know that you and I are actually friends and they will not let the children come to you anymore. So, I'm leaving. Please live happily with the children. Goodbye. Your friend, Blue Ogre." The red ogre read it in silence once more. Then he burst into tears and cried and cried.
